Navigating AI in Social Science: Western University's Approach to Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping various sectors, including education. At Western University, the use of AI in academic settings has sparked significant discussions, especially within the Faculty of Social Science. As AI technology continues to evolve, the university is focused on promoting responsible and transparent use while adapting to the unique needs of each course.

Current Landscape at Western University

The Educational Policy Committee (EPC) at the Faculty of Social Science recently deliberated on implementing a standardized AI policy across the faculty. However, given the diversity of courses and the varying roles AI can play, the EPC decided against a one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, Western University emphasizes that course outlines should specify the extent and nature of AI use, empowering instructors to set their own guidelines.

Key Policies on AI Use

  1. Transparency and Accountability: Academic integrity remains a top priority. Therefore, the use of AI, particularly in research, must be disclosed. This policy ensures that the academic community maintains trust and upholds ethical standards.

  2. Instructor Autonomy: At Western, instructors have the autonomy to decide how AI is integrated into their courses. This could range from prohibiting AI use to requiring students to critically evaluate AI-generated content. This flexibility allows instructors to tailor their approach to fit the specific learning outcomes of their courses.

  3. AI Detection Tools: Western has taken a cautious stance on AI detection technologies. The university advises against using tools like TurnItIn’s AI detector due to their high rate of false positives, especially among students for whom English is not a first language. Instead, the focus is on clarity in course syllabi regarding AI use, reducing reliance on imperfect detection technologies.

Looking Ahead

As AI becomes more embedded in academic and professional contexts, Western University is committed to fostering an environment that supports innovative learning while upholding academic standards. By allowing instructors the freedom to define AI use in their courses, the university balances the need for consistency with the flexibility required for diverse academic disciplines.
